01 · Before the dive

Every dive starts on paper

Before the team leaves the quay, the job already has a Diving Operation Procedure. That is where risk gets solved, not below the waterline.

01Scope of the job, location, vessel and draught
02Sea state, weather forecast and vessel traffic
03Subsea hazards: intakes, suction pumps and hydrostatic pressure differentials
04Depth and diving mode matched to the job
05Named team, with role and HSE training on record
06Certified equipment and spares aboard the support boat
07Briefing with the master and officers: nothing aboard that could endanger a diver is operated
08Toolbox talk at the start of every shift, and no dive begins without the master's clearance

Emergency and contingency plan

Written, drilled and reviewed every year. Everyone aboard knows who leads, who calls and where the diver goes.

Command

The diving supervisor leads the response. If the supervisor is the casualty, the most experienced first aider in the crew takes over.

First aid and oxygen

A trained first aider aboard on every job. The oxygen kit is checked before departure, charged for two divers on continuous flow for the whole trip back.

Call chain

Bahia Harbour Master on VHF channel 16, fire brigade 193 and ambulance 192. If sea conditions rule out a local boat rescue, SALVAMAR Salvador is called.

Shore support

The shore base sends the dive profile to the hyperbaric centre and has an ambulance with a doctor waiting at the landing point, on oxygen all the way to hospital.

Drilled scenarios

Loss of air supply, lost mask, entrapped diver, unconscious diver and communication failure. Each one with a written procedure.

Training

Annual drills for divers and supervisors, and a plan review every 12 months.

Job documentation

The diving procedure and the full emergency plan are sent to the vessel or agent on request.

Compliance is not decoration. It is what allows the ship to hire you.
